A new Jean Monnet Chair has been awarded by the European Union to Professor Dimitris Varoutas of our Department, focusing on European Digital Policies. The Jean Monnet Chair (JMC) in EU Digital Policies, entitled DIGIT-EU, is hosted by the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications and adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining public policy research, computer science, telecommunications, technology economics, and digital governance.
The primary objective of the Chair is to foster a deeper understanding of the EU regulatory framework in the digital era. The research and teaching activities of the Chair cover a wide range of critical contemporary issues, placing European Digital Governance and the concept of Digital Sovereignty at the core. Indicative thematic areas include challenges arising from Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, the competition regulatory framework for Big Tech companies, and the dynamics of the Digital Economy. At the same time, particular emphasis is placed on the protection of fundamental rights in the EU—such as data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity—viewed through the lens of sustainability in the digital world.
Extending its activities beyond strictly academic settings, the Chair offers opportunities for participation and access to specialized resources to the broader university community (faculty members, teaching and research staff, researchers, and students), as well as to professionals from the digital industry. The aim is to examine the practical implications of EU regulatory instruments and to ensure effective knowledge dissemination through a multifaceted set of actions, including specialized seminars, workshops, and conferences, as well as modern digital communication channels such as podcasts and newsletters.
