Presentation of MSc thesis of Thomas Makrygiannis and Vasilis Stamatopoulos entitled: “Leveraging the Matrix Profile for Real – Time Atrial Fibrillation Detection”

The presentation of the thesis of Thomas Makrygiannis and Vasilis Stamatopoulos entitled “Leveraging the Matrix Profile for Real – Time Atrial Fibrillation Detection” will take place at the ATHENA RC, Zampoli Meeting Room on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 10.30 p.m. and online through the following MS Teams meeting.

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a type of cardiac arrhythmia, which is characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rate (HR) that can lead to poor blood flow to the body. Current solutions for detecting AF include, a) Electrocardiograms (ECG or EKG); b) Holter monitors; c) Event monitors and d) Smartwatches and other wearable devices. While smartwatches and other wearable smart devices have been gaining popularity with regards to arrhythmia detection due to their ease of use and access, their results are not as accurate as the other methods.

This work aims to increase the accuracy of smartwatch devices to detect AF by examining the use case as a time series anomaly detection problem. We try to provide a fast and accurate solution by utilizing a modified version of the Matrix Profile algorithm in order to detect time series anomalies in multiple fast arriving data streams.

To improve the accuracy of our algorithm, we modify the Matrix Profile of the time series, using an Annotation Vector that is created online based on an algorithm provided by an MD. We evaluated our results on an open dataset with real AF-annotated Holter Monitor data, that we transformed in order to imitate incoming streaming data from a smartwatch.

The experimental evaluation showed that our guided search method outperforms both the baseline Matrix Profile method in terms of specificity, sensitivity and recall as well as one of the state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) methods.
