Abstract

This thesis presents an interdisciplinary analysis of space weather phenomena, their physical mechanisms, and their impacts on modern technological infrastructure and societal systems. Drawing from a wide range of international space weather databases and monitoring missions—including NASA’s OMNIWeb, NOAA SWPC, ESA’s Space Weather Service Network, and satellites such as GOES, SOHO, and SDO—the study investigates major historical and recent space weather events. These include the Carrington Event (1859), the March 1989 Quebec blackout, the July 2000 Bastille Day storm, the October 2003 Halloween storms, the Starlink satellite failure of February 2022, and the intense solar storm of May 2024.

The final chapters propose a comprehensive strategic response framework for space weather crises. This includes the development of enhanced early warning systems, international legal coordination protocols, and protection policies for critical infrastructures such as power grids, satellite and communication systems, aviation, and global navigation. The thesis emphasizes the growing urgency of space weather preparedness, concluding that strengthening resilience is essential for safeguarding both technological assets and societal functions in the space age.
